New York: A young black woman suggested the American reference dictionary Merriam-Webster to change its definition of the word “racism”.
Kennedy Mitchum, who is a recent graduate of Drake University, has contacted Merriam Webster to update the term “racism”.
Merriam Webster has published its dictionaries since 1847.
Speaking to local media, Kennedy Mitchum said that she called them and told they need to include that there is systematic oppression upon a group of people.
And Merriam-Webster’s editorial manager Peter Sokolowski confirmed to AFP that the definition would be modified after Mitchum’s request.
The dictionary currently offers three definitions of racism. We
