Could You Introduce Yourself?
I’m Soundarajan, a self-taught photographer. I was born in 1989 in Chennai and my root is from Kovilpatti which is in the Tuticorin district. I remember my life and happenings around me from the year 1995. My childhood days are only filled up with movies/television, hearing my family stories from my mother, counting days for Diwali, fear for mathematics, time spent with my lovable sisters, my father’s rough hand showering sweetness of care. Now I work for an IT Company in Chennai for the last 8 years.
Your Photographs Are Filled With Colours, Any Idea Behind It?
I don’t know much about colors, but I guess it inspires me unknowingly during my childhood days. During 1995, a saree seller used to come to our colony and make our home as center hub to sell his collections to all our neighbor aunties.
I like him very much; he is somewhat brown skin with strong KumKum on his forehead which will mesmerize everyone. I used to sit and watch how he sells sarees and those beautiful innocent talks with Rani akka, Kamatchi amma, Suseeela akka. Those ocean of silk sarees he showed during those 3 hours of business gives some sense of highness during those times, don’t know what’s that feel. But it’s purely good. I like colors very much due to “Pudavaikaar” (Saree Seller) we refer him like that. Don’t know where he’s now I think he’s filling colors in my Photographs. Also I don’t know to see whether black and white are correct in my photograph or simply I’m making a mistake by taking grey photos instead.
How You Interpret Colors ?
Earlier days I used to watch black and white movies with my mother; I started thinking it is really B&W on those days and now only the world is filled with colors. Most of the movies I watched with her were very slow and I don’t like it which created hate for Black and white. I felt colors are something real where we indulge in it. Reality is good and honest, even though disturbances are there.
Why Mobile Clicking Is Easier To You?
My father bought first mobile phone with a camera in 2004 and by that time I was addicted to movies. So I tried to replicate those movie frames via a mobile camera which is more compact and convenient for me to shoot whatever I want and wherever I want to place those tiny VGA camera’s.
The mobile camera gave me ease of use and compactness. Also I can shoot without much attention in public due to shyness. But I’m not sure whether using the mobile camera is a good way or not due to its size, recently my friend gifted me Compact manual camera sony RX 100 which is also compact. But the process is different and it makes me to work out as a better photographer. It gives me more discipline and muscle practice for fingers.
Which Photographers Work You Follow, And Why?
I started to read about photographers in 2015 and there only I got to know masters like Henri Cartier Bresson – he is a big magic for me on those days, how he clicked those pictures and after a recent workshop I tried to learn compositions from his works more. Vivian Maier – she is completely mysterious to me and shocking surprise how she locked out all her works in a case. Homai Vyaravalla – I like her period of journalistic works. Balu Mahendra – his golden hour frames which he refers as light given by God. His minimalism and simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.
One of my friends introduced me to the works of Masters like Alex webb, Martin Parr, Alec Soth, Raghubir Singh, Josef Koudelka. Especially, Josef koudelka’s way of approach towards life inspired me a lot and also I heard about his work called “Gypsy”. It is a series of photographs which made a huge impact on me. The one more photographer named as Daido Moriyama also inspired me. Precisely, his approach towards photography and his pragmatic way of style impressed me.
What Makes You To Capture?
Watching movies and listening stories from parents during my childhood days builds my creativity like I can able to visualize images in mind. As a result my mind churns out a lot of visuals and happiest stories throughout a day which I used to imagine and run it in mind throughout school hours – kind of 7 to 8 hrs movie. I live happily in my virtual life. Simultaneously, by the time, my father bought us Yashika Auto Film Camera in May, 1995, which helps me to photograph many things. Those photographs and my fantasy imaginations inspire me to take photos, but by the time some of my pictures were decent one’s and some of them were poor photographs.
What Photography You Do?
Really I don’t know genres and I don’t know which genre I belong to. I randomly take pictures and I don’t like to put myself in one box.
Sometimes I take photographs in the streets, in my home, at my father’s shop, and I take pictures of my sister’s kids and my family members too. Particularly I love to take exclusive portraits of my parents.
Any suggestions For Upcoming Photographers?
Be simple and honest towards your work. Everyone longs for appreciation. But I always would like to hear words like vera level, mass, which are the real words I believe. So, try to get real words from people.
