Difference between Lockdown and Social Distancing. Learned people once said ‘With Freedom comes Responsibility’.
Lockdown is imposed when people who govern have lost the trust that freedom will be used responsibly by the people who are governed. The first lockdown was a knee jerk reaction. But the second lockdown was the result of misuse of freedom or lack of trust on the citizens.
Lifting of lockdown doesn’t technically mean the pandemic is over. It is an expression by the ruling class that they believe the citizens will use ‘Freedom Responsibly’
Social Distancing – If at all the lockdown is lifted, the responsibility shifts to the citizens. Every citizen should contribute to building the trust that we will use our Freedom with utmost responsibility. We should have leaders emerging amongst each other to guide each other. We should follow Social Distancing not because there are cops or others looking at us, but because we know it is our responsibility. This is the time for citizens to show that we are a self-disciplined group who can set our own rules and also follow them.
Our governments are capable of cracking macro issues. But you and I know that ‘small drops make an ocean’. You and I know the problems we face at the ground level and we should become innovative to handle them. By following Social Distancing in shops, we may end up standing in the sun for a few hours if they are crowded. Instead of breaking order and crowding we should be agile, determined and creative. Maybe create a token system for different streets in our locality. Maybe one person can collect the list of items to be purchased from 10 houses (group purchases). But all these cannot come from the government. But it can come from you.
Let us all unite to Pledge – “ I will use my Freedom Responsibly. I will follow Social Distancing. I will solve my local challenges and guide my community to prove – We are a group of Self-Disciplined Human Beings – We are Social Beings”.
