Digital media will operate under the Ministry of Broadcasting – Central Government
The Central government has issued an order that digital media, including digital news and the OTT platform, will operate under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
There is no law yet for digital media that broadcasts/uploads current events and news. Although the Information Technology Act 2000 provides the legal framework for digital media, these are not brought under direct control by any ministry.
On November 9, President Ram Nath Govind signed the order. In an order issued by the Secretary of the Cabinet Secretariat last night, it was reported that although the digital media is increasingly under the administrative control of the ministry, the central government will pressure companies in the digital media to develop self-regulation systems to promote their interests and interact with the government.
The Cabinet Secretariat revised the Government of India (Business Allocation) rules under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to include “films and audio-visual programs made available by online content providers”and”news and current affairs content on online sites”.
As for print media, there is the Indian Press Council. It has a legal, court function. For television news, the self-regulation body of the News Broadcasting Standards Authority operates;
As for films, the central government created the Indian Film Audit Committee through the Film Censorship Act of 1952. Currently, the Screen Audit Committee operates under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting; The Broadcast Content Complaints Council is responsible for streamlining non-news entertainment programs in India (broadcasting content contexts country). It is an independent and self-regulatory body; Similarly, the Indian Advertising Standards Council regulates advertising.
Government News of the Department for the Promotion of Industry and Domestic Trade 4/2019 – The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting said that 26% of foreign investment in broadcasting / uploading of current events and news through digital media is permitted in accordance with the central Government’s decision.
